Completion of the National Burns Unit Refurbishment at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin 8.
Brendan Merry & Partners are delighted to announce the completion of both phases of the refurbishment and upgrade works to the National Burns Unit at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin 8. BMP provided Quantity Surveying services on the project, which was delivered by main contractor Moston Construction within a live hospital campus.
Phase 1 centred on major infrastructure and fire-safety upgrades. The works included a new elevated, steel-framed plant enclosure for air-handling equipment serving the existing ward, together with a structural services bridge connecting new mechanical and electrical installations into the Burns Unit at high level. The phase also incorporated extensive internal fire-protection upgrades, including fire-rated walls and ceilings, firestopping, works to existing fire doors, roof works and associated building services.
The subsequent phase reconfigured and refurbished the existing ward and delivered a new extension. The completed accommodation includes new isolation rooms, day-room areas and staff changing facilities, supported by upgraded clinical and ancillary spaces. The works also included new partitions and doors, specialist radiation-shielded construction for the ICU Rooms, hygienic wall and ceiling finishes, new floor finishes, fitted furniture, sanitary facilities, and substantial mechanical and electrical installations.
Delivering construction works beside and within an operational hospital required careful phasing, close coordination and stringent control of access, dust, noise, vibration and services. Existing hospital systems, access routes and fire-escape provisions were maintained throughout the works, with connections to live mechanical and electrical infrastructure carefully planned to minimise disruption to patients, staff and visitors.
The completion of the project provides enhanced clinical accommodation and upgraded infrastructure for the National Burns Unit. We are pleased to have worked with St. James’s Hospital and the wider project team in bringing this important healthcare project through both phases to completion. A great outcome for St. James’s Hospital, and congratulations to the project team which included:
