Historic Building Transformed as Thurles Market Quarter Development Completes
Brendan Merry & Partners are delighted to announce the successful completion of the Thurles Market Quarter development for Tipperary County Council, delivered in partnership with O’Gorman Construction (Ardfinnan) Ltd., where BMP acted as Quantity Surveyor.
The project has carefully restored and refurbished a historic 19th-century farm building into a modern café facility. In September 2025, One 19 Coffee from Templemore was selected as the leaseholder for the new café. The business is owned by Tipperary GAA star Paddy Caddell.
A striking new external canopy has been installed beside the River Suir, allowing the space to continue functioning as a car park while providing a purpose-built covered market space — home to Market 54, a vibrant weekly artisan and craft market in the heart of Thurles. Market 54 held its inaugural market on 21st March 2026, bringing together local producers, craftspeople, and small businesses. From artisan food and handmade crafts to unique gifts, local produce, and fresh coffee, Market 54 runs every Saturday from 10am to 2pm, creating a lively social hub for the community. The specialist canopy was installed by Base Structures UK Ltd., who have completed several similar projects across Ireland.
Like any construction project, there were challenges along the way — from bat colonies to uncovering additional works in connection with existing buildings and utilities. However, Brendan Merry & Partners worked closely with design team partners McCullough Mulvin Architects, O’Connor Sutton Cronin, and IN2, alongside the client and main contractor, to overcome these challenges in a collaborative manner throughout.
Markets have always been part of the social fabric of Irish towns — it is good to see that tradition being renewed in Thurles. The development represents a significant investment in Thurles town centre and will enhance the vibrancy of the Market Quarter area for residents and visitors alike.
