Infirmary Road
Description
Dublin City Council has officially approved the Montpelier Project, heralding a major revitalisation of the long-abandoned Former Isolation Hospital on Infirmary Road, Dublin 7.
The historic hospital wings and ancillary buildings, some scarred by fire damage and years of neglect, will undergo extensive conservation and refurbishment. Early “enabling works” in 2023–24 cleared away overgrown vegetation, asbestos and debris, stabilising the structures with temporary roofs and carefully storing original windows for re-installation.
Under the approved scheme, the project will:
- Retain the existing form and footprint of each block
- Extend the East and West wings with glazed “winter gardens”
- Convert flexible interiors for classes, meetings, after-school clubs, and workshops
- Designate the largest wing as an anchor facility—hosting receptions, senior-citizen activities, self-help groups, and an information hub
- Transform the north building into a welcoming kitchen/café with indoor seating and an outdoor terrace
A distinctive taller roof and rooftop lantern on the café block will serve as a glowing beacon, signalling the site’s new role at the heart of Montpelier Gardens.
